Though you've probably already looked into it Bukkit (http://bukkit.org/) is a really solid Minecraft server mod, there are plenty of user generated plugins (swearing filters, anti-griefing etc.) already created and the ability to create your own (http://dev.bukkit.org/ there's some decent documentation).
